Write to Live -

High School

Write to Live writing workshops and courses put youth at the center of their world, its beauty and its struggles. Write to Live is a course that creates space for youth of color to address topics of wellness, justice and injustice in ways that are critical, empowering and innovative. The goal is for students to create their own tangible solutions for dealing with the social and political issues of our day. After analyzing a topic of interest, discussing it and partaking in relevant, thought-provoking activities, youth are tasked with using the art of writing to create solutions as an outlet for creative expression and empowerment. Writing prompts, activities and discussions result in final products such as poetry, speeches, debates, bill proposals and advertisements. These projects are based on topics ranging from your innate and chosen identities, to education, gentrification, the criminal justice system, environmental justice and more.

Character Building through Social Justice

(all ages)

We stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way for us. Educators are often faced with the question of whether to address certain social justice issues with young children. The reality is, you are never too young to learn truth, it just needs to be delivered in a way that is digestible and empowering. Looking at the role models of history and the present is a great avenue for this. These lessons provide insight into the lives of role models, the issue(s) they faced, the characteristics it took to overcome, and how those characteristics can be applied in our day-today life. This approach is not limited to elementary students, but can be carried out with more rigor and relevance for middle and high school students also.
